FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Orthodontic Treatment and What Does It Do?
Orthodontics is a dental specialty that focuses on correcting irregularities of the teeth and jaw. It provides benefits not only in terms of aesthetic appearance but also for chewing and speech functions. Proper alignment of crowded teeth can also positively affect gum health. Additionally, untreated jaw irregularities may lead to joint problems in the future.
How Long Does Braces Treatment Take?
Braces treatment typically lasts between 12 and 36 months. The duration depends on factors such as the patient’s age, dental structure, and compliance with the treatment. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene can positively influence the treatment duration. In some mild cases, results can be achieved in as little as 6 months with clear aligners.
At What Age Should Orthodontic Treatment Begin?
The first orthodontic examination is recommended around the ages of 6–7. At this stage, tooth and jaw development can be evaluated, and early intervention can be planned if necessary. During adolescence, treatment often responds more quickly because the jaw bones are still developing. However, effective orthodontic treatment options are also available for adults today.
Is Orthodontic Treatment Only for Aesthetic Purposes?
Orthodontic treatment is not only for aesthetics but also essential for oral health. Properly aligned teeth make chewing and speaking easier. In addition, the risk of tooth decay and gum disease is reduced because cleaning becomes easier. If jaw misalignments are not corrected, they may also lead to head and neck pain.
Is Getting Braces Painful?
In the first few days, mild pain, sensitivity, and a feeling of pressure may occur. This discomfort usually subsides within a few days. Consuming soft foods and using pain relievers can help ease this process. Afterward, the body adapts to the braces, and the discomfort typically disappears.
What Should Be Considered While Wearing Braces?
Hard, sticky, or crusty foods should be avoided as they may damage the braces. Special brushes, dental floss, and interdental brushes should be used for proper cleaning. Additionally, carbonated drinks and sugary foods should be limited. Regular check-ups should not be missed to ensure the treatment progresses as planned.
Do Braces Damage Teeth?
Braces do not damage teeth when used correctly. However, if proper oral hygiene is not maintained, problems such as tooth decay, tartar buildup, and gum inflammation may occur. The areas around the brackets should be cleaned carefully. After treatment, it is important to continue maintaining good oral care habits.
Is Orthodontic Treatment Permanent?
The permanence of orthodontic treatment is closely related to the retention phase after treatment. Appliances called “retainers,” which can be fixed or removable, help maintain the new positions of the teeth. These appliances need to be used regularly and for a long period. Otherwise, the teeth may gradually shift back to their original positions over time.
Which Is Better: Clear Aligners or Traditional Braces?
Clear aligners offer advantages in terms of aesthetics and comfort. Traditional metal braces are generally preferred in more complex cases. Aligners can be removed while eating and brushing teeth. However, for successful treatment, they must be worn for at least 20–22 hours per day.
How Much Does Orthodontic Treatment Cost and Are There Payment Plans?
The cost of orthodontic treatment varies depending on the materials used and the duration of the treatment. Pricing is determined after a clinical examination and evaluation. Many clinics offer installment options and personalized payment plans. Alternatives such as clear aligners and ceramic brackets may also affect the overall cost.
